Rich Nunes ‘92, Linda Murnane & David Traub ‘92 Racism in the Judiciary System

When talking about why he has dedicated his life to fighting racism and injustice…Rich said “IT’S ALL ABOUT LOVE” So, what are the questions we need to ask ourselves?

  • How can I help?

    • Allies must take risks

  • What is your passion?

    • In order to be an ally, you must have a passion that is attached to what you are willing to give up.

    • What are you willing to give up in the name of being anti-racist?

      • Friends?

      • Your place at the table?

      • What else?

How would you feel if you were the only white person in the room/in the neighborhood?

  • Make sure the minorities in the room know they are welcome (this is inclusion)

  • Treat others how you would want to be treated if the situation were reversed…with warmth

WHAT ARE YOUR ACTION STEPS?

  • We asked you to write down 2-3 things you can begin to do right now in your life

    • Doesn’t matter how big/small

    • Discussed in breakout groups

    • How will you implement?

    • We will do progress check ins on this in upcoming meetings!

If you weren’t on the call, we urge you to do this exercise and feel free to share in an email or keep to yourself and then you can choose to participate in the progress check-ins in the future. Some examples of macro and micro suggestions:

  • Fighting for paid internships/programs & funds to support students who cannot afford unpaid internships

  • Reach student to tell them we are here for them and it is “all going to be alright”

  • Career talks to let students lacking social capital know that they have support/options

Many expressed interest in focusing next school year on internship support for current HC students

“BE THE PERSON THAT LIFTS UP THE PERSON BEHIND YOU”
